ChatGPT Ads for B2B

What ChatGPT Ads can't do for B2B, and a two-week first test

The limits that matter for B2B advertisers in ChatGPT Ads as of October 2026: who sees ads, no company targeting, aggregated reporting, contextual-only ads in the EEA and Switzerland, bidding, and a small first test that works within them.

ChatGPT Ads let you appear below an answer when someone asks a question related to what you sell. For B2B that's valuable, because the question is often a buying question. But the format has hard limits: no company or job title targeting, no ads for users on workplace plans, aggregated reporting only, and in Europe, matching on the current conversation only. Plan a first test around those limits instead of expecting LinkedIn-style ABM.

For the full launch plan, see the ChatGPT Ads B2B playbook. This article is about what the channel can't do, how to work around it, and a deliberately small first test.

The format in one paragraph

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored cards shown below ChatGPT's answer, labelled as sponsored and visually separate from it. OpenAI says "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers" and that it doesn't share conversations with advertisers (OpenAI Help). You buy in OpenAI's Ads Manager. At the time of writing, its help centre lists three campaign types: CPM, billed per thousand impressions; CPC, billed per valid click; and oCPC, which optimises for actions after the click but is still billed per click. Budgets can be daily or campaign-total, with daily minimums such as $25 in the US and €15 in Europe (OpenAI Help). Creative specs are in ChatGPT Ads creative specs.

Limit 1: you can't target companies or job titles

There's no company list, no job title, no seniority and no industry targeting in OpenAI's campaign setup documentation. Delivery is driven by the conversation and the ad's context; the targeting you set is location (country, and in the US also states, DMAs and ZIP codes), platform (iOS app, Android app, web) and custom audiences to include or exclude (OpenAI Help).

What this means for ABM: you can't use ChatGPT Ads to reach a named account list. Anyone in your target countries who asks a related question can see the ad, including students, consultants and people at companies you'd never sell to.

How to work around it:

  • Target the question, not the person. Questions like "best close management software for a NetSuite company with 200 employees" self-select for buyers. "What is month-end close" doesn't. The narrower and more commercial the question, the better the audience. See ChatGPT Ads buyer questions.
  • Use LinkedIn for the list. LinkedIn is where you control which companies and roles see you. ChatGPT Ads cover the moments when buyers research in an AI assistant. They're complementary; see Running LinkedIn and ChatGPT Ads on one target account list.
  • Identify companies after the click. The visit lands on your site, where company identification can tell you which business network it came from.

Limit 2: buyers on workplace plans don't see ads

Ads may appear on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says "Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads", and ads aren't shown to accounts identified as under 18 (OpenAI Help).

For B2B, this matters more than any other limit. A buyer using ChatGPT through their employer's Business or Enterprise plan won't see your ad there. You reach them when they use a personal Free or Go account. That audience is real, but smaller and harder to size than ChatGPT's headline user numbers suggest.

How to work around it: don't build a forecast on reach. Judge the test on what you can measure: clicks, identified companies and pipeline.

Limit 3: in the EEA and Switzerland, ads are contextual only

ChatGPT Ads now run for Free and Go users in the EEA and Switzerland, but there they're matched on the current conversation only. OpenAI says personalised ads, which can use "select signals from your broader ChatGPT experience", are "not initially available in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland"; without personalisation, ads are limited to the current chat (OpenAI Help).

OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists EU countries such as Germany, France, Poland and Spain, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK, as available for self-service at the time of writing. It notes that the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in an available country, and that advertisers in the new European markets can currently get started through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team or through agency and technology partners (OpenAI Help).

What this means: in Europe, the current conversation is effectively the only targeting signal you have; signals from wider ChatGPT use don't apply. That makes question selection even more important there.

Limit 4: reporting is aggregated

OpenAI says advertisers get only aggregated performance data, such as total views or clicks, not who saw the ad or what they asked (OpenAI Help). There's no per-company or per-question report of the kind LinkedIn gives you.

How to work around it:

  • Tag every landing page URL with UTM parameters per ad group, so each buyer-question group is measurable on your site.
  • Install OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API for platform-side conversion tracking. See ChatGPT Ads measurement.
  • Identify companies on the landing page. IntentBid's visitor identification names the company behind visits from business networks, so you can see which companies clicked which ad group.
  • Expect gaps. Visits from home broadband, mobile data and VPNs can't be tied to a company by anyone.

Limit 5: some categories and contexts are off-limits

Ads aren't shown to accounts identified as under 18, and OpenAI says they're "not eligible to appear near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health, or politics" (OpenAI Help). Ads also go through review before they serve. If you sell into healthcare or the public sector, expect some of your most relevant questions to carry no ads at all.

What ChatGPT Ads are good at

None of this makes the channel weak. It makes it specific. It's strong at:

  • Catching buyers mid-research, in the exact moment they ask a comparison or "best tool for" question.
  • Reaching people who don't use LinkedIn much, or who don't match your LinkedIn targeting but are clearly in market by what they ask.
  • Testing positioning. The questions that produce clicks tell you how buyers frame the problem.
  • Covering AI-answer gaps. If ChatGPT's organic answer names competitors and not you, a sponsored card below it puts you in the consideration set while you work on AI visibility.

A two-week first test

Small, cheap and readable. The goal isn't to prove ROI in two weeks; it's to learn whether your buyers' questions produce clicks from companies you'd sell to.

Setup (day 0)

  1. Pick 3 buyer-question clusters, each with 5 to 10 real questions: one comparison cluster ("X vs Y", "alternatives to Y"), one problem cluster ("how to cut close time with NetSuite"), one category cluster ("best close management software for mid-market").
  2. One ad group per cluster, with a card written for the next question the buyer will have, not a slogan.
  3. One landing page per cluster, matching the question, with UTMs per ad group.
  4. Bid per click. Use a CPC campaign so you pay for visits, not views. We couldn't find a recommended bid on OpenAI's own pages, so start with a cost per click you'd accept for a visit from a buyer and adjust once you see delivery.
  5. Budget: enough for roughly 100 to 150 clicks across the test. At an illustrative $4 a click, that's $400 to $600 over two weeks. Check it against Ads Manager's daily minimum (at the time of writing, $25 a day per campaign in the US, so about $350 for 14 days).

Read (day 7)

  • Which clusters get impressions at all? A cluster with almost none is too narrow or its questions rarely happen.
  • Which clusters get clicks? Drop or rewrite the card in clusters with impressions and no clicks.

If one cluster produces identified ICP companies and high-intent visits, expand that cluster and give it a month. If none does, rewrite the questions before you raise the budget.

FAQ

Can I upload my target account list to ChatGPT Ads?

Not as a company list. OpenAI's campaign setup describes location, platform and custom audiences, but no company or job title targeting. Use LinkedIn for named accounts, and ChatGPT Ads for the buyer questions those accounts ask.

Do ChatGPT Enterprise users see ads?

No. OpenAI says ads may appear on the Free and Go plans only; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't have ads.

Can I run ChatGPT Ads in Germany or France?

Yes. Ads are shown there, but matched on the current conversation only, not personalised. At the time of writing, OpenAI lists Germany and France as available for self-service Ads Manager, and says advertisers in the new European markets can currently get started through its Ads Solutions team or partners.

Does running ads change what ChatGPT says about my brand?

OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers. Being named in the answer itself is a separate job: AI visibility, or GEO/AEO.

Which IntentBid plans include ChatGPT Ads?

Every plan. ChatGPT Ads run in your own OpenAI ad account, with no fee on media spend. See pricing.
