ICP versus buyer persona

An ICP describes companies. A persona describes people inside those companies. ABM needs both, in that order: first the companies worth pursuing, then the roles to speak to.

How to define an ICP, step by step

  1. Start from your best customers. Which ones closed fastest, stayed longest and pay the most? Look for what they share.
  2. Write down the firmographics: industry and sub-industry, company size (employees, sometimes revenue), region and languages, business model (B2B, B2C, marketplace) and technology stack where it matters.
  3. Name the buying roles. Departments (finance, IT, operations, marketing…) and seniority (owner or founder, C-level, VP, director, manager). Note who decides and who uses.
  4. Add disqualifiers. Too small, wrong region, regulated sectors you cannot serve.
  5. Test it on the market. How many companies match? If it is a few dozen, widen it; if it is tens of thousands, tighten it or tier it.

How Find your ICP builds it for you

You give IntentBid your website and the region you sell to: UK, EU or US. Then you choose the seniority and departments you sell to and the list size.

From your website we work out what you sell and the market you compete in, then find the companies in that region whose decision makers match your choices. The result is a list of companies, each with the number of decision-maker positions and their main role, for example "Finance · 4 decision makers". You never see people or emails, and none are uploaded to ad platforms.

The first count is free, so you see the size of your market before you build a list. Companies already in your other lists are skipped, so each new build brings new companies.

What to do with the ICP

  • Microsoft Advertising: the companies become company targeting, the roles become job function targeting.
  • Google Ads: the ICP feeds custom segments built from the searches your buyers make and the sites they read, plus lookalike companies.
  • ChatGPT Ads and AI visibility: the ICP decides which buyer questions to track and advertise beside.
  • CRM: send the companies to HubSpot so sales sees the same list.

Straight answers.

What is an ideal customer profile?

A description of the type of company that gets the most value from your product and is most valuable to you: industry, size, region, business model and the roles that buy.

What is the difference between ICP and TAL?

The ICP is the description. The target account list (TAL) is the actual set of companies that match it, which you use for targeting and reporting.

How many criteria should an ICP have?

Few enough to be clear: usually industry, size, region and the buying roles, plus a handful of disqualifiers.

Do I need customer data to use Find your ICP?

No. Your website and the region you sell to are enough to start. You can refine seniority, departments and list size.

Will I get names and emails?

No. You get companies and the number of decision-maker positions with their main role. People and emails are never shown.
