ChatGPT Ads B2B playbook: a 6-week launch plan
A week-by-week plan for launching ChatGPT Ads in B2B: who sees ads, account setup, buyer-question ad groups, the ad card, bidding, tracking and how to judge the test.
A B2B ChatGPT Ads test works best as a structured six-week plan: confirm your markets and tracking, build ad groups around specific buyer questions, write a card that adds something the answer didn't, bid per click, then judge results on identified companies and qualified pipeline. Expect a smaller, work-skewed audience, because paid workplace plans don't show ads.
What you're buying
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored cards shown below a ChatGPT answer, labelled and visually separate from it. OpenAI states that ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers and that advertisers don't get access to conversations; reporting is aggregated (OpenAI).
Facts that shape a B2B plan, as of October 2026:
- Who sees ads: logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users don't see ads.
- Where: a growing list of countries. After the US, OpenAI added markets including the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, then 31 European markets in August 2026, with further expansion reported since. Check Ads Manager for the current list.
- How you buy: a self-serve Ads Manager, plus agency and technology partners. Bidding started on CPM; OpenAI has since added CPC and conversion optimisation (OpenAI).
- What decides matching: the conversation, your ad and landing page, and the context you give. Targeting options include geography and custom audiences. There is no company or job title targeting.
- Where ads don't run: next to conversations about health, mental health or politics, and not for users under 18.
The workplace-plan point matters most for B2B. Buyers who use ChatGPT through a company Business or Enterprise plan won't see your ads there. You reach them when they use a personal Free or Go account, which many professionals do for research. Plan for an audience that is real but narrower than ChatGPT's headline user numbers suggest.
Week 0: decide whether to test
ChatGPT Ads make sense when buyers already ask AI assistants about your category. Signs that you're ready:
- Your sales team hears "I asked ChatGPT for options" on calls.
- You track buyer questions and know where AI names competitors and not you.
- You have a landing page per use case, not just a homepage.
- You can trace an ad click to a company and a CRM record.
If none of these are true, start with AI visibility and tracking first.
Week 1: set up the foundations
- Create or connect your Ads Manager account and add billing in the right currency.
- Install measurement. Add the OpenAI Pixel, and the Conversions API if you can send server-side events. Define conversions that mean something: demo requests, trial signups, qualified form fills.
- Keep the click reference. Preserve OpenAI's click parameter and your UTM tags through redirects, and store them in hidden form fields so leads can be traced. Details in ChatGPT Ads measurement.
- Turn on company identification on your website, so each click can be tied to a company even without a form fill.
- Write down your success criteria now, before you see any numbers.
Week 2: build ad groups from buyer questions
Keywords don't exist in the same way here. Your unit of planning is the buyer question. Pick three to five clusters for the first campaign:
| Question type | Example | Why it's worth testing |
|---|---|---|
| Category shortlist | "best accounts payable automation tools for a mid-sized manufacturer" | Buyer is building a shortlist |
| Alternatives | "alternatives to [category leader] for a team of 50" | Buyer is ready to switch |
| Integration | "AP automation that works with NetSuite" | High-fit buyer with a known stack |
| Problem | "how to stop late supplier payments" | Earlier stage, larger volume |
| Validation | "is [your category] secure enough for a regulated company" | Late stage, smaller volume |
Prioritise questions where AI answers name competitors and not you. An ad there is your only presence in that moment. Our guide to ChatGPT Ads buyer questions shows how to research and group them.
Week 2: write the card
The card is short: your name and logo, a title, a short description, a square image and a link. Character limits are tight; at the time of writing titles run to about 50 characters and text to about 100, so check Ads Manager for current limits.
- Add what the answer didn't. The user has just read a full response. Repeating "the leading platform for X" adds nothing. Offer a specific outcome, a fit statement or a next step.
- Match the question. An integration question deserves an integration message. "Native NetSuite sync, live in a week" beats a generic tagline.
- Speak to the role behind the question. See B2B ad copy by role.
- Use a clean square image. Product UI or a simple visual. Never design an image that imitates a chat message.
- Land on the matching page, not the homepage.
Week 3: launch and bid
- Start with CPC so you pay for visits, not views, while you learn.
- One campaign per region, because pricing, language and compliance differ.
- Set a daily budget you're willing to spend for six weeks without changing it every day. Constant edits make a short test unreadable.
- Review the ad's approval status. New ads go through OpenAI's review; a rejected or limited ad explains slow delivery.
Weeks 4 and 5: read and adjust
Look at the data weekly, not daily.
- Cut clusters with clicks but no engaged visits. The question attracts the wrong people, or the card promises something the page doesn't deliver.
- Rewrite cards with low CTR before raising bids.
- Check which companies clicked. Are they in your ICP? On your target list? This is where B2B results show up first.
- Add questions from what you learn on sales calls.
Week 6: decide
Judge the test on the criteria you wrote down in week 1. Useful measures:
- Companies identified from ChatGPT ad clicks, and how many fit your ICP.
- Cost per identified company and per engaged account.
- Qualified opportunities from those accounts in your CRM.
- Assisted influence: accounts that clicked a ChatGPT ad and later converted from another channel.
OpenAI publishes no official benchmarks for B2B performance yet, so compare against your other channels rather than an industry number.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using a search keyword list as questions. "AP software" is not a question anyone asks ChatGPT.
- Ignoring organic answers. If the answer recommends three competitors, an ad below it fights uphill. Work on AI visibility at the same time.
- Judging on CTR alone. Cheap clicks from non-ICP companies are not a win.
- Promising what the page can't back up. Claims must be supported on the landing page.
How IntentBid helps
IntentBid connects to your own ChatGPT Ads account with 0% fee on media spend: you pay OpenAI directly. It lists the buyer questions where AI names competitors and not you, turns them into ad groups with context hints, and checks the card against the limits. Campaigns are created paused with compliance checks and launch only when you approve. The pixel names the company behind each click, and company engagement reporting follows the account afterwards. FAQ
Can I target companies or job titles in ChatGPT Ads?
No. Matching is based on the conversation and context, with options such as geography and custom audiences. Identify the companies after the click with company identification.
Do ChatGPT Enterprise users see ads?
No. According to OpenAI, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans are ad-free. Ads show to logged-in adults on Free and Go.
How long should a test run?
Six weeks is a reasonable minimum for B2B, because sales cycles are long and early data is noisy. Keep budgets and structure stable during the test.
CPC or CPM?
CPC is usually easier to judge for a first B2B test. CPM can make sense later for awareness on high-value questions.
Do ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
No. OpenAI states that ads don't influence answers. To appear in the answer, work on AI visibility.
