Google Ads works for B2B SaaS when you organise search campaigns by buyer intent, block job-seeker and student traffic, and optimise toward qualified pipeline from your CRM instead of raw form fills. Use Display, YouTube and Demand Gen for target accounts after a visit and for new reach built from your ideal customer profile.

Why B2B SaaS struggles on Google Ads

Google is where most software buyers check vendors, compare options and look up pricing. It is also where a B2B budget can disappear fastest. Three things usually go wrong:

  • The keywords are too broad. "CRM" or "project management software" pulls in freelancers, students and people who want a free tool.
  • The conversion is too shallow. If Google is told that every form fill is equal, smart bidding will find the cheapest form fills, not the best customers.
  • Display and video run on autopilot. Without exclusions and audience controls, banners end up in mobile games and low-quality sites.

None of this means Google is a bad fit. It means the default settings were built for high-volume consumer advertisers, and a SaaS company with a narrow buyer has to change them.

Structure search campaigns by intent

Separate campaigns by what the searcher is trying to do. That keeps budgets honest, because brand terms convert cheaply and would otherwise hide weak category campaigns.

CampaignExample queryJobWhat to measure
Brand"yourbrand pricing"Protect demand you already createdImpression share, cost per demo
Competitor and alternatives"alternatives to [category leader]"Win buyers who are already evaluatingQualified pipeline per click
Category"expense management software for mid-sized companies"Capture active shoppersCost per sales-accepted lead
Problem"how to automate month-end close"Reach buyers earlier, often research stageEngaged accounts, assisted pipeline
Integration"[your category] for NetSuite"High-fit buyers with a known stackDemo rate, deal size

Keep ad groups tight around one theme, so the headline can repeat what was searched. Responsive search ads give you up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters. Pin sparingly: one pinned headline with the category word is usually enough.

Negative keywords

Build a shared negative list on day one and apply it to every non-brand campaign. Typical B2B SaaS negatives:

  • Jobs and careers: jobs, salary, hiring, career, internship, resume.
  • Learning: course, certification, tutorial, definition, what is, pdf, template (unless you sell templates).
  • Free and personal: free, open source, personal, for students, crack.
  • Wrong segment: enterprise or small business terms that don't fit your ICP.

Review the search terms report every week for the first two months. B2B queries are long and varied, so new waste appears constantly.

Track conversions that mean pipeline

This is the single biggest lever. Smart bidding is only as good as the signal you feed it.

  1. Track the visible actions. Demo requests, trial signups and contact forms, with the Google tag or Google Tag Manager. Mark pricing page visits as secondary, not primary.
  2. Capture the click ID. Store gclid (and UTM tags) in hidden form fields so each lead in your CRM can be traced back to the click.
  3. Import offline conversions. When a lead becomes sales-qualified, or an opportunity is created, send that event back to Google Ads. Google's offline conversion import and enhanced conversions for leads are built for this.
  4. Value the stages. Give a qualified opportunity a higher conversion value than a raw lead, so value-based bidding prefers the clicks that create real deals.

Once Google can see which clicks became pipeline, the same budget usually buys a better mix of leads. Expect the reported cost per lead to rise while cost per opportunity falls. That is the trade you want.

Bidding and budgets

  • Start with Maximise clicks or manual CPC on new campaigns with no history, with a bid cap.
  • Move to Maximise conversions or target CPA once a campaign has steady conversion volume. Google's systems need a reasonable number of conversions to learn; very low-volume B2B campaigns often perform better grouped together.
  • Use target ROAS or Maximise conversion value only when you import pipeline values reliably.
  • Fund brand separately. Never let brand campaigns share a budget with category campaigns.

There is no correct budget for SaaS. Work backwards from the number of qualified opportunities you need and your historical rate from click to opportunity, then test for long enough to get a meaningful sample.

Search waits for buyers to type. Most of a buying committee never does. Google offers three ways to reach accounts more deliberately, each with honest limits.

Company audiences after a visit

Google Ads cannot target a company by name. What it can do is retarget people who visited your site. When company identification tells you a visit came from a target account, that visitor can join an audience for that account tier. Display, YouTube and Gmail placements then keep the conversation going. We explain the setup in Google Display ABM with company audiences.

Custom segments from your ICP

Custom segments describe your buyers by the searches they make, the sites they read and the apps they use. For SaaS, describe the job the buyer does every day, not only your product category. See custom segments for B2B for recipes by role.

Customer Match, carefully

Customer Match lets you upload contacts, but only your own first-party contacts who have a relationship with you, such as trial users or customers. Never upload bought or scraped lists. For cold accounts, use Microsoft's company targeting instead; we compare the two in Microsoft Ads vs Google Ads for B2B.

Performance Max and AI Overviews

Performance Max can work for SaaS, but it decides placements and audiences for you. With a shallow conversion goal, it tends to find cheap form fills. If you test it, feed it imported pipeline conversions, add account-level negative keywords and placement exclusions, and compare it against search on cost per opportunity, not cost per lead.

Google also shows ads inside or next to AI Overviews through existing Search and Performance Max campaigns. There is no separate targeting option for that placement, so the same intent structure and ad copy carry over.

Common mistakes

  • Optimising to form fills. The algorithm learns what you reward.
  • One campaign for everything. Brand hides weak category performance.
  • Leaving Search Partners and Display expansion on by default in search campaigns without checking the results.
  • No placement exclusions on Display. See our guide to placement exclusions for B2B.
  • Judging upper-funnel campaigns on last click. Look at engaged accounts and later visits instead.

How IntentBid helps

IntentBid connects to your own Google Ads account with 0% fee on media spend: you pay Google directly. It builds search campaigns from the buyer questions you track, ICP custom segments, and company audiences that fill when the pixel identifies a visit from a company. Every campaign is created paused and runs through compliance checks before you approve it. Company engagement reporting shows which accounts each campaign brought and what they did next.

FAQ

Is Google Ads worth it for B2B SaaS?

Usually, for capturing active demand. Buyers search for categories, alternatives and pricing on Google. The return depends on tight intent structure, strong negatives and conversions that reflect pipeline, not raw leads.

Can Google Ads target specific companies?

No. Google does not offer company-name targeting. You can reach target accounts after they visit your site, describe your buyers with custom segments, and use Customer Match with your own first-party contacts.

Should a SaaS company bid on competitor names?

It is common and allowed, within Google's trademark rules on ad text. Use a dedicated campaign, honest copy and a comparison page that answers the buyer's question. Judge it on qualified pipeline, because these clicks are often expensive.

How long before smart bidding works?

It depends on conversion volume. Low-volume B2B accounts often need several weeks and may need to group campaigns so each has enough conversions to learn from.

What is a good cost per lead for SaaS?

There is no reliable universal number. Benchmarks vary by category, region and deal size. Track your own cost per qualified opportunity and improve it over time.
